Sepia-toned panoramic composite photo of Hoboken waterfront from 5th St. to 3rd & Hudson Sts., n.d., ca. 1901-1905.
Photograph
Sepia-toned panoramic composite photo of the Hoboken waterfront from Fifth Street to ca. Third & Hudson Streets, no date, circa 1901-1905.
Four mounted prints, 5-3/4" high x 30" overall length. Photographer is not indicated. Reverse of mounting board is blank. PDF on file.
Date is estimated from two main points: 1, the early date from the brick pier buildings of the North German Lloyd Steamship Lines piers No. 1 and No. 2 which were new structures built after the 1900 pier fire, ca. 1901-1902; 2, the late date is probably established by the towers associated with the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Ferry (Hoboken Ferry) and the D.L.& W. Railroad Terminal which is seen at the upper right corner - both burned down in August 1905. An additional indicator is that the American flag seen flying in Hudson Square Park near Fourth and River Streets and which appears to be the 45 star flag used from 1896-1908.
View is southeast at left to south at the right. Hudson Square Park from Fifth Street to Fourth Street is in the foreground.
From left:
-Edwin A. Stevens Hall, Stevens Institute of Technology at northeast corner of Fifth and Hudson Streets (site runs from Hudson to River Street.)
-Fifth Street seen going down to River Road
-Holland America Line Fifth Street Pier (sign is visible over entry gate)
-Three boat club buildings believed to be, from left, Active, Valencia and Atlantic.
-Pier 1 (north) and Pier 2 of the North German Lloyd Steamship Lines or Company (insignia logo on both headhouse buildings)
-Fourth Street from Hudson to River St.
