Archive
Four Victorian calling cards from Hoboken, no date, circa 1875-1890. Size and content varies - see descriptions below.
While no markings on the cards stated Hoboken, the donor said that these cards were formerly from an album with Hoboken identified contents.
William E. Borries, who presented two (possibly three) of these cards, has been found in an 1894 Boyd's Directory as living at 728 Park Ave, Hoboken, and in the 1906 and 1911 Boyd's Directory at 824 Washington St. He is listed as an architect in each of these directories.
Card 1: Signed - William E. Borries; gilt-edge card with rounded corners, 2" x 3-1/2" high; hand-painted decoration, roses and spray. Reverse blank.
Note: a faint diagonal penciled line was used by Borries as a guide for his signature.
Card 2: Signed - William Borries. Printed card: Happy New Year; Sincerely Yours with calligraphic bird and floral decoration. Gilt-edge card, 2" x 3-5/8" with folded corner as issued with applied burgundy cloth bow. Reverse blank.
Card 3: Card with oval window at left with inserted tintype of a young man, not identified, but possibly William E. Borries. Gilt edge card, 2" x 3-1/2" wide, rounded corners; hand-painted floral decoration surrounding photograph. Reverse is blank.
Card 4: Signed - Rosalie L[eNore]. Chartrand (this card is probably not earlier than 1885, see notes.) Plain edge card, 1-7/8" x 3-1/8" wide; hand drawn diamond with hand-painted pansie floral decoration. Reverse is blank.
----
It is possible that Chartrand was also responsible for the floral decoration on the first three cards.

Notes: Card 4 is probably Rosalie LeNore Chartrand (1871 - 1957); per information as found at Ancestry.com in 2013 for Rosalie LeNore Chartrand: Born in Matanzas, Cuba on 21 Feb 1871 to Esteban Sebastian Chartrand and Mercedes Galves. Rosalie LeNore married Ashley Earnest Chaplin. She passed away on 2 Feb 1957. Based on this information it is likely that she was the artist whose paintings are signed: Rosalie Chartrand Chaplin. She lived in South Carolina. Her connection to Hoboken other than this card is not yet known. Status: OK Status By: dw Status Date: 2013-02-15
