Photograph
Black-and-white photos, five, of the loading of industrial fixtures as deck cargo on unidentified Holland America Line ship, Hoboken, no date, circa 1947-1952.
8" x 9" high prints. Photographer not indicated. Reverse of all are blank.
All views show the lifting, placement and securing of long tubular steel vessels with access ports (apparently for some industrial process) as deck cargo on ship in Hoboken.
While not captioned or otherwise identified, the images are known to be a Holland America Line ship based on their provenance. They can also be placed in Hoboken by the Manhattan background and vessels in the Hudson River.
The presence of two ships seen on the river, the R.M.S. Queen Mary (returned to civilian passenger service on July 21, 1947 after a refitting) and the ferry Catskill of the New York Central System (burned in 1952 and was scrapped in 1955), help to provide a probable date range. (Alternately these photos may have been taken well before 1940 and the start of World War II, but the presence of these photos in the hands of Adriaan P.L Roggeveen suggests the postwar era.)
Photo 1: lifting of a section onto a fore deck.
Photo 2: another section has been loaded on an aft deck. Note the R.M.S. Queen Mary in the background heading upriver.
Photo 3: same work work area as photo 2. Note the Queen Mary is further upriver and the ferry Catskill of the New York Central System is heading downriver.
Photo 4: continuing work on securing the cargo. Note Cunard White Star Line pier across the river in the Chelsea section; also visible in the haze are the towers of Metropolitan Life Insurance and New York Life Insurance buildings.
Photo 5: continuing work on securing and inspecting cargo
