Essentially a travelogue of towns along the routes of the railroad starting from Hoboken which is the main eastern terminal of the road. Pages 8-19 are a brief history of the railroad which as with many railroads of the period was a combination of many companies. Pages 23 to 29 are a description of Hoboken which is typical of other towns. The history focuses on the Stevens family. At the rear is a ca. 15" x 19" fold-out map of the railroad routes and branches covering northern New Jersey, southern half of New York and northwest Pennsylvania. No table of contents, but a two-page index of the towns described in the book is on pages [5-6.]
The work does not describe anything technical such as motive power, rolling stock, buildings or railroad staff and operations. The wood engravings (which are not listed) are of notable buildings or views from the places written about. They are not views of depots, terminals, etc.
