Sooner Rather Than Later: A Memoir for Family and a Few Friends. By John R. Cooke. Self-published, no date [2007-2008.] Copy 2. 8vo softcover. 221 pp., photographs. No index.
Chapter 2, pp. 24-42, is titled "Hoboken, New Jersey (1933-1948)" References to Hoboken also appear on pp. 9-11. The rest of volume details his life and extensive business career none of which was related to Hoboken although there may be references to Hoboken which have not been detailed.
Family lived in Hoboken at 60 Twelfth St. ("yellow flats" [Elysian Flats]) and operated a luncheonette at the southeast corner of Hudson and Fourth Streets called Park View Lunch. Authors recounts how it was established to become the front a gambling operation. Also mentions building owned by an uncle at 604 Washington St.; an A&P grocery store on Washington St. next to the U.S. Theatre; education at Saints Peter & Paul Parochial School along with Demarest for his siblings.
Father was Otto Koch of Hoboken who changed his name to John Cooke and known as "Cookie." Useful volume for background on the Koch/Cooke families and extended families, but there is no formal genealogy. Also useful for its account of Hoboken life in the Great Depression and World War II.
