Ship's Bell, Chelsea: from ferry "Binghamton" which operated from Hoboken to N.Y.C. from 1905 until Nov. 22, 1967.
Object/Artifact
Chelsea Ship's Bell, striking clock, from the ferry "Binghamton" which operated from Hoboken to New York from 1905 until Nov. 22, 1967.
Manufactured by Chelsea Clock Co., Boston, Mass., serial number 197498 which indicates manufacture in probably 1930 or early 1931. According to donor the clock was installed during a 1934 refurbishment of the ferry. See provenance.
Hinged brass 10" bezel with brass body; silvered brass face with black arabic numerals and black hands. Three holes for wall mount. Manufacturer's model and name on face. Serial numbers on back. Overall size: 10-5/8" diameter (back mounting ring) x 3-5/8" deep. Not so marked, but it is probably an eight-day clock movement as shown for similar items seen in on-line historical catalogues of the maker. Typically the movement would strike every half hour.
With: nickel or chrome plated winding key. Clock and bells were wound for test; did not operate.
