Pass: Delaware, Lackwanna & Western Railroad, issued to Hon. Augustus C. Canfield, Senator, for free passage until December 31, 1878, on the Morris & Essex Division and the Warren Railroad.
Printed card stock, one sided, 2-1/4" x 3-7/8" wide. Printed in black with underprinting in red "1878 Good only on Morris & Essex Division" - added in red ink below was "And Warren R.R."; holographic entry of holder and title; signed by Sam Sloan (President of the D.L. & W.R.R. - his office was in New York.)
The line known as the Morris & Essex Division or M&E has its eastern terminus at Lackawanna Terminal in Hoboken. DL&W formally leased the Warren Railroad in October 1857 and it connected circuitously to the M&E.
Canfield was a New Jersey State Senator from Morris County and lived in Succaruna. He was also a railroad man which may be an explanation for this courtesy pass. (see notes.)
