Selected text up to page [10] ==== School History Every project must begin with an ideal and so Our Lady of Grace School began in Hoboken 125 years ago. A great man with a noble vision by the name of Father A. Cauvin realized the necessity of providing a Catholic Education for. the young children of Hoboken. The following brief history of Our Lady of Grace School will hopefully reveal how the school struggled and evolved during the course of time as it sought to bring to reality the noble objectives of its founders. In August 1863, Father Cauvin resolved to build the school on a piece of property on Willow Ave., which he had previously purchased in 1859 for that purpose. Realizing his dream, the school was completed in August of 1864. Fr. Cauvin at the time was also successful in obtaining the services of the Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth to take charge of the school. Ever since 1864 the Sisters have given their services to Our Lady of Grace School and Parish. Once the school was established the task of its fulfillment commenced. (Continued on next page) ==== SCHOOL HISTORY (continued) The school has demanded dedicated perserverance and has continued for 125 years due to the support and advice of many pastors and parishioners. The "philosophy" of the school has been, since its origin, dedicated to the development of basic Christian values and high academic standards. The "Aim" of the school has been, since its origin, dedicated to giving young Americans a knowledge and appreciation of community and Civic laws. Our Lady of Grace School owes its long, successful existence to the vision and generosity of the many, many great Pastors, Parishioners, and Teachers who have remained loyal. One hundred twenty five years is a long time for any establishment. As a tribute, we are putting this write-up in the 125th Anniversary Journal. The journal is dedicated to the many, many great people who have helped the school down through the years. Many pastors have come and gone. Many principals have come and gone. Many teachers have come and gone. Many parishioners have come and gone. Many, many thanks to all of them for their services. The school has clearly demonstrated its purpose as an educational center for the Archdiocese of Newark, with a particular interest in the young children of Hoboken. Renovations have necessarily been made down through the years, but the reasons and objectives for which the school was built have not changed. Educational methods have changed but the basic curriculum has not changed. In conclusion, we all hope that Our Lady of Grace will continue in its efforts to impart a good Catholic education to the children of Hoboken for many, many years to come. MARGARET CUNNIFFE Present Principal of Our Lady of Grace School ==== [photo of Father Carrington] Our Lady of Grace 400 Willow Avenue Hoboken, N.J. 07030 201-659-03699 My Dear Parishioners, On September 1, 1864 Our Lady of Grace Parochial School first opened its doors under the direction of the Sisters of Charity, then of Madison, now of Convent Station, New Jersey. Obviously Father Anthony Cauvin, our founding pastor, had great insight to the needs of the local Catholic Community, In 1863 he called members ofthe parish to a meeting so that plans could be made to construct our school. It was begun in October 1863 when the first Bishop of Newark, James Roosevelt Bayley, a nephew of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, first laid the cornerstone and preached a sermon on the necessity for Catholic Schools. The building was finished in August of 1864 at a cost of $11,892.00, all of which was paid within a two year period. For 125 years O.L.G. School has prepared generations of Catholic young men and women for their service to God, country and community. This anniversary affords us the opportunity to proudly reflect on the memories of the past and recommit ourselves to the chal lenges of the future. In so many ways there are parallels between the school's founding and our current situation. Hoboken had experienced in the middle ofthe last century, demographic changes and one ofthe reasons for the establishment of the parish school was that it might become an efficient tool for evangelization for these new groups. The goal of the school then and today is the same; to instill within our young parishioners a love of Jesus Christ and our Holy Mother, the Catholic Church. I am most grateful that the successor of Bishop Bayley, Archbishop Mc Carrick will join us in our Mass of Thanksgiving. His committment to Cahtolic education is well known. Recently he wrote, "We must have the will to continue and to develop Catholic school education in our land. If we have the will, we shall find the way". As we thank the Almighty God for the past accomplishments of our parochial school we implore the maternal solicitude of our Lady of Grace. May our parish and school continue to be an effective instrument in the establishment of the kingdom of God in our midst. I thank all of you for your financial sacrifices and prayerful support for Our Lady of Grace School. Let us resolve to recommit ourselves to the principles of Catholic education. May O.L.G. continue to mold young men and women into ardent and dedicated disciples of Jesus Christ well into the 21st century. Sincerely yours in Christ, Rev. Richard J.
