8930 MILITARY ASPECT TO COLLEGE COMMENCEMENTS
A remarkable change has taken place in college commencements during the past year, which gives them the appearance of a decoration of troops rather than the presentation of diplomas. The uniform of the United States Army has for the most part displaced the time honored cap and gown. One of the first commencements of the year took place at the Stevens Technical Institute in Hoboken, N.J. Our photo shows several of the graduating class, only one of whom is attired in cap and gown, receiving their diplomas on the campus.

View is north of the students lined up on the athletic field. The athletic field served as a drill and parade ground during the war years. In the right background is Castle Point Terrace north from Eighth Street.
Note in the far distance down Castle Point Terrace is a tall industrial building (light colored): this is the Hoboken Manufacturers' Terminal building at Fifteenth St. that would become known as the Lipton Tea / Standard Brands building. (Lipton arrived in 1919.)
