Photograph
Sepia-tone photograph of a boy posed in photographer's studio wearing fireman's vest and helmet, New York, no date, circa 1890-1910.
4" x 6" high print tipped-on 7-3/4" x 11" high photographer's mount. Reverse of print and mount blank. Photograph taken by Rockwood, 2383(?) Broadway, New York.(see detail of blind imprint found on mount at lower right.)
Print is from Neumann files courtesy of the Bernheim Family; it was part of office decor in the sixth floor executive offices at 300 Observer Highway, Hoboken.
It is believed that this three to five year old child was the son of one of the early generation of Bernheim family members who were the owners and operators of R. Neumann & Co., a Hoboken based tannery and leather products manufacturer. He has not been identified. The apparel is child-sized with the vest bearing "F.D." on the front. He also appears to be wearing a sailor suit beneath (note insignias and patches on his left sleeve.)
