Notes: Archives 2013.060.0008 ==== ITCH Information Technology for the City of Hoboken itch@hudlink.hoboken.nj.us March 8, 1993 Information Technology for the City of Hoboken (ITCH) announces its first open meeting on Tuesday, March 30,1993 at 7:30 PM in the back room of Maxwell's (11th & Washington Streets) in Hoboken. At this meeting, ITCH will discuss its first major project - designing, building and operating a public computer network for Hoboken's citizens, taxpayers and public servants. Everyone who lives or works in Hoboken is invited to attend. ITCH envisions these services being offered to Hobokenites at no charge: Public bulletin boards to discuss local and national issues, buy and sell things, publicize local events, and meet their neighbors. Electronic mail within Hoboken and throughout the world Access to local government information. Access to USENET News - thousands of special interest bulletin boards from around the world. Access to thousands of databases at universities throughout the US and the world. Terminals will be strategically placed in public areas around town to allow those without computers and modems to use to the network. People with personal computers or terminals and modems will be able to use the system by making a local call. One of the most important aspects of this project is to give Hoboken's school children access to the many educational resources available on the Internet. Senior citizens can also benefit significantly from the sense of community a public network can provide. ITCH also hopes to develop a local computer volunteer corps which will provide free assistance to Hoboken city government and non-profit organizations in using new technologies. Many communities have successfully implemented community access computer systems - ITCH will build upon their experience.
