Notes: 2012.001.0069 Text from page vii: Foreword Many have helped and shared their enthusiasm in this project. I am in particular indebted to my fellow Flatwheelers, including Joe Cumming, Jim Dee, Charley Farmer, Bob Hasek, Don Jilson, Marty McCarthy, Art Ostrander, Roy Sprague, Joe Taylor, Ken Tompkins and Chuck Yungkurth. Others who should be mentioned include Elmer Dean, Bill Hayes, Hube Humphrey, Dick Pearson, Ed Weber and John Woodbury. Photos are credited to the maker and/or negative owner, if known. If two names are given, the first is that of the maker, and the second is the name of the negative owner. Those photos credited to Rail Photo Service indicate the name of the maker to the right. Photos credited to Rail Photo Service are used by permission of the late H.W. Pontin by letter to me, dated April 16, 1971. The photo of the "Phoebe Snow" at the Scranton station is used by permission of Audio Visual Designs and of Doug Wornom. The photo of the Oswego coal loading facility is used by permission of the Oswego County Historical Society. Much photo work was performed by Candid Photo Service of Elmira Heights, New York. Even though much of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad is still in operation, since its merger with the Erie Railroad on October 17, 1960, it has been only part of a larger system. Therefore, this monograph is written in the past tense, and covers the history of the railroad and its predecessors through that event. In word and in picture it recreates a bygone era, most especially the not so distant past of the great days of steam and fine passenger trains. Shelden S.
