HOBOKEN, There are few things nearer and dearer to our hearts than the city in which we live. Our family ties, our religious affiliations, our schooling, our friends and acquaintances usually are associated within the confines of our home town. “Home Town” has the sound of belonging and being a part of — a part of its present with a stake in its future. It connotes affection and pride along with a responsibility to its goodness and to its name. To a visitor or a native the first aspect of a city to meet the eye is its cleanliness or lack of same. The original impression is oft-times the most lasting. How does Hoboken look to you? Your official family is striving to make Hoboken a cleaner, healthier, more vital city with clean streets and sidewalks — sanitary refuse disposal — pleasant, well kept, good looking homes —- all those important objectives which go to raise a community above the ordinary level. We need your help. We provide the refuse collector but if you as a landlord or a tenant do not provide the sufficient covered cans for proper disposal, our effectiveness is lost. We provide the street cleaner, a water flusher, crews of men with hoses and brooms, but, if you do not clean your stoop and your sidewalk — if you litter the street and refuse to curb your dog — we cannot succeed. If you refuse to place your garbage cans out for collection during the proper hours or leave them out till all hours after the pickup, or if you place your leavings in paper bags or cardboard boxes, our streets must become dirty and unsightly. Fire Hydrants are not proper storage places for paper, lumber and old furniture. Depositing the above at such points creates a fire hazard. It is unsafe and unlawful. Focal points in our city have disposal baskets for impromptu disposal. Their use is important. It immeasurably cuts down the litter that ordinarily would be found on our sidewalks. The City Council has designated the week of May 23rd as Clean-Up-Week. City-wide and school-wide publicity has been set in motion to promote this campaign. The Department of Public Works is geared to handle such an undertaking. All the forces of the city will cooperate. This effort toward making Hoboken a cleaner city and thus a healthier city is not designed solely for Clean-Up-Week. It is meant to be a day to day, week to week, permanent and lasting project. Will you help us? Will you talk it over with your neighbor? Will you by your example prove to the people next door that it can be done. The results will be most gratifying to you and your family. All of Hoboken will profit by your participation and will be in your debt. Working together we can achieve a success that will make us all proud.
