Print: "The first Hammonia" of the Hamburg-America Line.
Built 1885 [sic] by the British Yard Caird & Co. (No dated, published ca. 2000?)
Stiff paper leaf, 5-11/16" high x 8-1/4" wide, imprinted with title above; black-and-white print, 4" x 6-3/8", of passenger ship tipped-on above title.
Hammonia (1) is generally listed as built in 1854 (sometimes seen as 1855) and was in the Hamburg America fleet until 1864. There was no 1885 date for a Hammonia; (Hammonia (3) was launched in 1881 and listed as entering service in 1882.
The source of this depiction of this combined steam and sail passenger ship is not known.
While later Hamburg-America vessels with this name (there were four others) did dock in Hoboken, it is unknown if this ship did.
