Collections Item Detail
Silver water pitcher presented to a Hoboken Police officer in 1893 recognition of 25 years of service.
Object/Artifact
Silver water pitcher presented to a Hoboken Police officer in 1893 recognition of 25 years of service. [Hoboken, circa June(?) 1893.] Engraved inscription on the side: Congratulations of the Members of the Hoboken Police Dept. Also engraved dates under spout: 1868-1893.
The name of the officer to whom it was presented does not appear on the piece, but it was Henry Rathjen whose name is engraved on a silver tray probably presented at the same time and which is dated June 21, 1893; see objects 2008.024.0002. See notes.
Triple plate silver with hinged lid, 13" high x 6-1/2" diameter, 10" wide with spout and handle. Unpolished as found, but remains of dried polish visible in fine detail. Manufactured by Roger & Bro. and so marked on bottom with pattern number "387." Two 1/8" diameter holes in the bottom not affecting its ability to hold water (or coffee, but the spout shape was usually intended for water); it has an integral liner that does not go to the bottom.
See accession record for additional notes.

Notes: Note the tray, 2008.034.0002, has the same year range dates 1868-1893, but the inscription to "Henry Rathjen and Frau zu ihrer Silbernen Hochzeit" (which translates as "and Wife for their Silver Anniversary" ) which would indicate it was for a wedding anniversary rather than the commemoration of Henry's 25 years of service to the Police department. The service and wedding anniversaries may have coincided. Status: OK Status By: dw Status Date: 2008-03-26
