Object/Artifact
Silver tray presented to Henry Rathjen and wife on their silver anniversary (25 years) by his Brothers of Hoboken Masonic Lodge No. 71, June 21, 1893. Rectangular tray, 12" x 16" with rounded corners. No maker's mark. Unpolished as found.
Inscription reads: 1868 - 1893 | Br[other]. Henry Rathjen and Frau | zu ihrer | Silbernen Hochzeit | Geoidoet von der | Hudson Loge, No. 71, F. und A. M. | den 21ten Juni, 1893.
(F.A. und M. is F.A. & M. or Free and Accepted Masons.)
Note this tray was presented at same time as the silver pitcher, objects 2008.033.0001, which has the same dates (it has a different inscription notably that it was from the Hoboken Police and believed to be for his twenty five years of service to the department, but it did not have the name of the honoree Henry Rathjen or his wife. Also note that "zu ihrer Silbernen Hochzeit" does translate as "for their silver anniversary" which would indicate a wedding anniversary since his wife ("Frau") is included.
It is possible that the wedding and service anniversaries happened to coincide.
See accession record for additional notes.
