Medal token: The Road of Anthracite. Lackawanna Railroad. C.P. Barrett, Gen[eral]. West[ern]. Pass[enger]. Ag[en]t. Chicago. No date, ca. 1900-1914 or 1919-1923. Bronze relief, circa 1-5/16" diameter with irregular outline. Made by The Greenburg(?) Co., Chicago as marked on back bottom.
Back is lettered with "Hoboken" at the left and "New York" at the right. Top: "To and From Europe." Bottom: "Lackawanna Terminals." the center has the outline of an open hand reaching from Hoboken to New York. The palm is lettered "Ferry To" and the four fingers lettered with the current ferries: 23rd St., Christopher St., Barclay St. and Ellis Island.
The Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad acquired the Hoboken Ferry Company and 1900 and operated these lines. Since European travel was suspended from 1914-1918 due to World War I, this medal or token was either from the 1900-1914 period or from circa 1919-1923 (when Ellis Island closed.)
