Date: 1925-1941
Notes: Object found in discarded materials at 101 Washington St., the former Washington Savings Bank. The cornerstone is dated 1929. In Oct. 2008, under TD Banknorth, banking operations ceased and the building was cleared of all furnishings and materials. The item probably was originally acquired by bank staff in the 1929+ period from the Observer which had its offices diagonally across the street from the bank. The newspaper closed in 1951. The paper celebrated significant anniversaries in 1917 (25th) and 1942 (50th.) Since there is not a mention of the 50th and when the paper closed, it was probably not the "largest" evening paper, the date of this ruler is probably between 1929 (bank moving into its building) and 1941 (before the newspaper would have promoted its longevity on an advertising item of this sort.)
