Employe (sic) Complimentary Trip Pass for rail travel from Elmira to Hoboken issued to T.L. Simpson by United States Railroad Administration; Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad Co., Hoboken, Sept. 12, 1919.
Printed form, two-sided, 3-3/8" high x 5-1/8" wide on security paper with typewritten entries, inkstamp, ink, pencil and facsimile signatures. Serial number O43545. One conductor's punch. Perforated edges left and bottom indicating a form book.
Imprinted at front top, United States Railroad Administration. W.G. McAdoo, Director General of Railroads. (Federal government control of American railroads during the World War.)
William Gibbs McAdoo resigned on November 14, 1918, effective January 1, 1919. (He served in this post for only a year.) His successor was Walker D. Hines on January 11, 1919. Apparently this book of forms was stock printed in 1918 for use in 1919 and continued to be used throughout 1919 with the previous Director General's name.
Confusingly, on the front to the right edge is printed in red: NOT GOOD FOR TRAINS 3 AND 6; on the back in the same relative position is typewritten: Good on trains 3 and 6.
Employee Simpson (a conductor) lived in Morristown, N.J. The pass was good for one trip only for a month from the date of issue, Oct. 12, 1919.
