Ribbon badge: German-American Democratic Club of Hoboken, July 4, 1902. Mayor Adolph Lankering.
Object/Artifact
Ribbon badge: German-American Democratic Club of Hoboken, July 4, 1902. Mayor Adolph Lankering. "Public Office is a Public Trust." Stamped metal pin-back clasp bar with red-white-blue striped ribbon imprinted in gold; attached photo button with image of Lankering and text.
Overall: 1-5/8" wide x 4-1/4" long; photo button 1-1/4" diameter.
Lankering served as Hoboken Mayor from 1901-1906. The event held by this organization while obviously related to the Fourth of July holiday was apparently also a rally supporting the Mayor. It could be interpreted as a display of both their patriotism and cultural heritage.
The button is celluloid with a celluloid cap back with the manufacturer's imprint (The Whitehead & Hoag Co., Newark, N.J.) Their imprint is also on the ribbon and on the edge of the photo button.
