Notes: The Jersey Journal Hoboken Observer The Hoboken River City Fair The Hoboken River City Fair was started by the Hoboken Environment Committee in 1974. The purpose then — and now — was to get people to see their waterfront. Back in 1974 we were vigorously opposing plans for an oil tank farm along the waterfront. We envisioned the fair as the most effective way to get our message across that the waterfront should be for people and not for the exclusive use of heavy industry. The enthusiasm generated by the River City Fair helped prevent the establishment of the tank farm and also brought about the much-needed repaving of River Road. Today, the Fair continues its historic mission — to insure recreational waterfront space for the people of Hoboken. Our current concern focuses on the plans for Hoboken's waterfront development. All of us must insist that we get park space and continuous access to the waterfront. They must not be allowed to exclude us. Welcome to the Hoboken Waterfront!
