Object/Artifact
Sign: K & E Precise and Sturdy; K&E Transit; K&E Level. Issued by Keuffel & Esser Co., (New York), no date, circa 1945-1960. Double sided sign: printed paper mounted to both sides of 5/32" thick chipboard or upson-type board, 21-3/4" wide x circa 24-1/2" high (bottom is irregularly trimmed with loss of part of the image; original height was probably ca. 28-30" high.) Two holes with 1/4" brass grommets at top edge centered 3-1/4" apart for hanging.
K+E general offices and factory were in Hoboken up to 1967.
The front, titled "K&E Precise and Sturdy", depicts a profile view of a transit in the typical illustration style of the catalogue. No model numbers are seen. Partially seen at the bottom is a ribbon banner with the company name: Keuffel & Esser Co.
The upper portion of the back is titled "K & E Transit" with three labeled diagrams, two of which are keyed to a component parts list. Shown is section through a telescope, a drawing of the optical system of the lenses, and a profile view of a transit on a tripod.
The lower part is titled "K&E Level" showing a 'Wye' level on a transit and asection through length of the telescope with the labeling and parts lists as done for the transit. The image of the level and the list of component parts is only partially seen due to the trimming of the bottom edge.
All printing is in black except for border frame. All of the illustrations including component drawings are similar to catalogues of the period.
