Two oven brushes used for cleaning bread baking ovens at Grand Bakery (closed March 2004), 738 Willow Ave., Hoboken, circa 1960-2004. Wood with natural fiber bristles. No maker's marks.
Purpose of item was to clean crumbs out of oven to prevent burning of other batches of bread and related products.
Each is a single piece of wood (species undetermined - probably pine) with medium dark stain; no varnish; 7/8" thick x 1-1/2" wide (bristle end.) Other dimensions vary by object as recorded below. Shaped handle with eased edges.
Brush 1: 43-1/2 long with 19" brush length; bristles 2-3/8 high.
Brush 2: 41-3/8" long with 17-1/2" brush length; bristles 2-3/8 high, but most are shorter due to significant wear.
The variances in sizes make if probable that these items were made at different times.
