Measuring chain (surveying), U.S. Standard, steel 50 foot, model, 6410, made by Keuffel & Esser Co., N.Y., n.d., ca.1890-1905.
Object/Artifact
Measuring chain, U.S. Standard, steel 50 foot, model, 6410, made by Keuffel & Esser Company, New York, no date, circa 1890-1905.
Twelve guage steel links and rings with brass handles at each end. All links and rings are brazed. Adjustment screw end of final chain at each end; four shaped brass marker tags at ten foot marks (shaped to to indicate 1 for 10 feet; 2 for 20 feet and so on.)
Typically used in land survey work by a surveyor and assistant (or one end could be held by a stake.)
Brand end handles, stirrup shape, 3-3/4" wide x 2-1/2" long. Stamped on flat of one handle end: Keuffel & Esser Co., New York. 6410. Stamped on the flat of the other handle end: Tested K&E. 50 Ft Steel No. 12.
Each chain or link is ca. 11-3/8" long with closed brazed eyes (this made them more accurate than ones that were not brazed and could possibly open when pulled tight) at each end. Connected to the next link by an oval ring that is also brazed. Generally, it is 12" from center to center of the oval rings with one chain connecting them. The final chain at each end was slightly shorter so that combined with the connecting adjustment chain bolted through the handle and the handle itself, their length together would measure one foot.
Item number is from before 1905 (33rd edition). From at least 1905 onward, the catalog lists this item as 7781A.
While marked "New York," K&E general offices and factories were in Hoboken at the time this item was manufactured.
