Print: The Sybyl's Cave, Hoboken. Ca. 1850s. Original image was wood engraving, ca. 6-1/2" wide x 7-1/2" high, published in a 19th century magazine; hand colored; mounted on stiff paper.
Source location: S.C. Williams Library, Stevens Institute of Techology. Stevens Family Collection; Series I – Historical Documents; Box 6 - Hoboken Land Improvement Company - Acts & Pamphlets; Folder 14 - Sybil's Cave, Colored Engraving; 1826.
Typewritten label on reverse. Source: S.C. Williams Library, Stevens Institute of Techology.Digital copy only.
The later common name was "Sibyl's" rather than "Sybyl's."
The front has a penciled date "1826" and the text on the reverse uses that date as "Color engraving from Gleason's Pictorial dated 1826."
The date of 1826 is probably not correct. Gleason's Pictorial Drawing Room Companion started publication in 1851; the cave with stone portal is not believed to have existed before the early to mid-1830s.) Illustrations in Gleason's Pictorial, note the text showing through the sheet, such as this wood engraving were not typically issued as colored engravings, but the painting of this printed image in watercolors was possibly contemporary.
It is probable that this is not from Gleason's, but from some other contemporary publication. The size suggests that it is from the 1840s or later.
