Photograph
Sepia tone photo of Castle Point and River Walk in 1885, Hoboken, no date, circa early 1880s.
Print 4-1/2" high x 7-1/2" wide. Photographer not indicated or established.
A winter view looking north - northeast from the banks of the Hudson River. Benches and tables are seen along with tavern and shed for visitors during the summer to Elysian Fields and Sybil's Cave.
A published E.F. Walter postcard (2006.034.0336) from the early 20th century uses this exact same image and captions it as "Castle Point and River Walk in 1885".
A similar view published in 1909 from a Walter source (2005.024.0002.75), labels it as Sybil's Cave and River Walk, 1880.
While Ernest F. Walter was a photographer, his active period does not seem to coincide with the photo and he is not considered as the photographer.
There are no telephone or telegraph poles seen.
Print was found on leaf 2-2 in album 2013.053.0001, see that primary record for album description.
