Hand-colored engraving on cream wove paper, no watermark. Leaf, 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" as removed from a binding; source publication not stated or known. The print was previously matted and framed. Lightly foxed and darked image area of former matte window. It is an early view of River Walk and Sybil's Cave showing a bucolic Hoboken and a placid Hudson River with three sailboats in view. Visitors are seen at the Cave and in the distance along River Walk heading towards Elysian Fields. Landscape painter Gignoux (1816-1882) was born and trained in France; active in America as part of the Hudson River School from 1840 to the 1870s. The oil painting that this engraving was based upon has not been found listed in any on-line records. The date attribution is apparently based on other New Jersey scenes done by him in this period.
