A Brief History of the Indigenous in New Jersey

November 8, 2022 @ 12:00 am

November 1 marks the start of Native American Heritage Month, and we are pleased to share news of a wonderful program by the Union Public Library,  “A Brief History of the Indigenous in New Jersey.” The presenter is Steve Burton, Tribal Historian/Keeper of Cultural Lifeways, Ramapo-Munsee Lenape, and Chair of the NJ State Commission of American Indian Affairs. It’s co-sponsored by the Union Township Historical Society. Watch it on Tuesday, November 8 at 7:00pm on ZOOM, use the “RSVP” button to register here to get the link: https://uplnj.org/event/a-brief-history-of-the-indigenous-in-new-jersey/

“We are indebted to the Courage and Sacrifice of our Ancestors and give full recognition to Their Contributions and Offer Words of Honor To Their Memory.”  The Ramapo-Munsee Lenape homeland once extended from Western Connecticut to Eastern Pennsylvania, and from the Northern bank of the Raritan River North to Albany N.Y. Today we barely control our ancestral home in the Ramapo mountains, encompassing a mere 7-mile radius. Learn about the history of one of New Jersey’s tribes.
