Art Exhibit Opening: Gary Spector’s “Portraits of Essential Workers – Hoboken Hospital 2020”

April 14, 2021 @ 12:00 am

The Museum’s Upper Gallery will present a new exhibit of photographs by Hoboken photographer Gary Spector, whose solo show “Portraits of Essential Workers – Hoboken Hospital 2020” opens Sunday, May 2, with a reception from 2 – 5 pm. It will remain on view through June 13.

The exhibit may be visited in person, as long as visitors wear masks and observe social distance. The Museum’s occupancy is limited under the current state guidelines. An artist’s talk with Spector will air on YouTube/Facebook/Twitter at 7 pm on Friday, April 30, for those who can’t visit in person. It will be available for replay afterwards on YouTube.

The exhibit features black and white portraits of some of Hoboken’s essential front-line medical workers from the Hoboken University Medical Center hospital. Spector is an accomplished professional photographer who makes time to fulfill fine art photography projects as well. To see a portfolio of his work, click here: https://www.garyspector.com/

This is Spector’s second art exhibit at the Hoboken Museum. His first, in 2018, featured dramatic color portraits of Hoboken residents in full Halloween costume, shot over seven years in his stoop-front temporary studio. Click here to see a sampling of images from that project.

The exhibit is supported by a block grant from the State/County Partnership program for the Arts, administered by the Hudson County Division of Cultural and Heritage Affairs.
