Janine Pommy Vega Street Naming

June 26, 2025 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

With Mayor Brian Stack’s support, Union City Commissioners prepared a resolution to name a street after poet and Union City resident Janine Pommy Vega. Janine was a Beat poet and feminist trailblazer.

The street sign will be on the corner of 47th Street and Palisade Avenue, and will be called Janine Pommy Vega Way. This is where her family’s house once stood, now replaced by a community indoor swimming pool.

After the unveiling, a reception and poetry event will be held to more fully share Janine’s work and celebrate her life at the Musto Cultural Center. It’s fitting that after all these years, the city where she was raised is acknowledging and honoring her as one of their own.

The street naming ceremony will take place on Thursday, June 26 at 12pm at the corner of 47th Street and Palisade Avenue.

The program for the street naming ceremony will include:

  1. Welcoming remarks from: Union City Commissioners Fernandez, Martinetti, Valdivia, Grullon
  2. Presentation of the Resolution – words about Janine Pommy Vega from Vera Sirota (Hoboken Historical Museum’s Communications Associate)
  3. Reading of Janine Pommy Vega’s poems by Danny Shot (Hoboken Historical Museum Poet in Residence) and Yetvart S. Majian (Washington Park Association Poet in Residence)
  4. Unveiling of the Street Sign – Janine Pommy Vega Way
