On Thursday, October 22, at 6:30 pm, the Hoboken Museum is pleased to host the latest installment of “Meet the Filmmakers,” a specially curated program of award-winning films including lively discussions with filmmakers, hosted by festival director Jane Steuerwald.

This month’s “Meet the Filmmakers,” presents Tiffany Shlain in conversation with Jane Steuerwald, interspersed with screenings of her short films: “The Tribe,” “The Making of a Mensch,” “The Adaptable Mind” and “50/50.” Shlain is an Emmy-nominated filmmaker, speaker, and Webby Awards founder. She has received over 80 awards and distinctions for her films and work, including selection for the Albert Einstein Foundation’s initiative, “Genius: 100 Visions for the Future.”

Shlain is on NPR’s list of Best Commencement Speeches, and was named by Newsweek as “one of the women shaping the 21st century.” The Museum of Modern Art in New York premiered her live cinematic essay performance, “Dear Human,” on Feb 15th, 2020. Her first book, “24/6: The Power of Unplugging One Day a Week” was published by Simon & Schuster’s Gallery Books in the fall of 2019 and has been featured in the New York Times, Harvard Business Review, and the Washington Post. Her book received The Marshall McLuhan Award for Outstanding Book in the Field of Media Ecology.

For 39 years, the Thomas Edison Black Maria Film Festival has been advancing the unique creativity and power of the short form. The Festival was founded in 1981 and is named for Thomas Edison’s original West Orange, NJ, film studio, whose resemblance to the familiar black-box shaped police paddy wagons sparked the nickname “Black Maria.” The festival is an international juried competition open to all genres and filmmakers across the globe.
