Opening Reception: “Hoboken People & Places, 1976-1994: Photographs by Michael Flanagan”
January 3, 2017 @ 12:00 am
The public is invited to the opening reception for the Museum’s next exhibition, “Hoboken People & Places, 1976-1994: Photographs by Michael Flanagan,” on Sunday, Jan. 22, from 2 – 5 pm. Featuring dozens of black-and-white photographs shot by Michael Flanagan in the 1970s and 80s, the exhibit reveals a city seemingly trapped in an earlier time, little changed from 1953, when “On the Waterfront” was filmed here. With his large-format Linhof camera set on a tripod, Flanagan documented his neighborhood Mom-and-Pop shops, the longtime Hobokenites and newcomers he grew to know during his two decades here, and the crumbling waterfront piers and streetscapes. They are at once the technically beautiful compositions of an accomplished photographer, and a haunting portrait of Hoboken on the verge of transformation.
