Paul Robeson: A 125th birthday celebration of his legacy, with Professor Lindsey R. Swindall

Join us at the museum on Sunday, April 23 at 4pm for, “Paul Robeson: A 125th birthday celebration of his legacy,” with Robeson scholar Professor Lindsey R. Swindall of Stevens Institute. Dr. Lindsey Swindall will be delivering a lecture exploring the idea of renaissance through the life of New Jersey Robeson. We will delve into the historical context of his art and activism while also considering how he was able to develop his many talents even in the face of discrimination. Swindall will also point out ways that Robeson, who reinvented himself throughout his career, can serve as an inspiration for navigating the complexities of living through times of political division. Her books will be available for sale.
Lindsey R. Swindall holds a doctorate in African American Studies from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She has written two books on Robeson: The Politics of Paul Robeson’s Othello and Paul Robeson: A Life of Activism and Art. Her book The Path to the Greater, Freer, Truer World examines two organizations with which Robeson was involved: the Council on African Affairs and the Southern Negro Youth Congress. Working with actor Grant Cooper, Swindall has also created a dramatic program on Robeson’s life for middle and high schools as well as colleges. She currently teaches in the College of Arts and Letters at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ.
