Talk: “Women’s Suffrage, 1920: New Jersey Women Regain the Right to Vote,” by Carmela A. Karnoutsos

The Hoboken Museum is joining in the commemoration of the centennial of the Nineteenth Amendment, passed in 1920, which granted women nationwide the right to vote. A lecture series by distinguished authors and historians will highlight the achievements of several famous New Jersey women.

Kicking off the series will be a talk by Carmela A. Karnoutsos, historian and professor emerita of NJCU, on Sunday, February 23, at 4 pm. Admission is $5, free for Museum members & students.

Karnoutsos’ presentation, titled “Women’s Suffrage, 1920:  New Jersey Women Regain the Right to Vote,” will feature prominent New Jersey women including Lucy Stone (pictured, top right), Mary Philbrook, Alice Paul (pictured, bottom right) and Caroline Stevens Wittpenn, among others.

During her tenure at NJCU, Dr. Karnoutsos taught courses on the history of women and had the privilege of meeting New Jersey’s most notable women in American history and politics Alice Paul of Moorestown.

Carmela A. Karnoutsos, Ph.D., is an alumna of NJCU and received her graduate degrees from New York University. Dr. Karnoutsos is the author of New Jersey Women: A History of Their Status, Roles and Images (New Jersey Historical Commission, 1997) and an associate editor of Past and Promise: Lives of New Jersey Women (Scarecrow Press, 1990). A charter member and former trustee of the Bayonne Historical Society, Inc., Dr. Karnoutsos served on the Bayonne Community Museum Board of Trustees and presently serves on the Bayonne Historical Preservation Commission.

Karnoutsos is co-author with Patrick Shalhoub of the history of the university, From Greenhouse to Campus: The Foundations of New Jersey City University (2010 New Jersey City University).  The two also created a website for NJCU, “Jersey City Past and Present.”
