“The Fires and the founding of the Hoboken Shelter” Mark Singleton in conversation with Rand Hoppe
March 31, 2023 @ 12:00 am
Join us in the Museum on Sunday, April 2 at 4pm for “The Fires and the founding of The Hoboken Shelter,” with Mark Singleton in conversation with the Museum’s Collections Manager Rand Hoppe. It’s the fifth in our series of six special Exhibit Events that complement our Main Gallery exhibit, “The Fires: Hoboken 1978-1982.” Mark grew up in Hoboken and was board president of the Hoboken Shelter for many years. Rand is a long-standing Shelter board member. They will discuss how the tragic fires moved Hoboken’s communities of faith to come together and offer shelter to survivors, and how that led to the founding of the Hoboken Shelter.
The event is free, and refreshments will be served. This event can also be viewed online live on Sunday, March 26 at 4 pm. To watch and chat on YouTube, just click here. To watch and comment on Facebook, just click here. It will be archived on the Museum’s YouTube channel and will be available there at anytime
There is one more “Fires” Exhibit Event left in the series, taking place at 1301 Hudson Street:
Sunday, April 16, 6pm (note 6pm start time): “The Survival of a People: A conversation about the living memory of the Hoboken fires,” with Yomaira C. Figueroa-Vásquez, Ph.D. and Hoboken-born consultant on the exhibit, in dialogue with Chris López. Dr. Figueroa-Vásquez is an award-winning writer, scholar, and associate professor of afro-diaspora studies at Michigan State University.
