On Sunday, February 28, at 4 p.m., Rutgers University Associate Professor of English and film studies Dr. Richard Koszarski visits the Museum for a talk titled, “Views of the River – Film History in Hoboken,” with film clips and stills from movies filmed up and down the Hudson and on the Palisades before 1940.

The Theater Company to Read A Christmas Carol

December 16-18, 2009

Hoboken-based The Theater Company continues a holiday tradition with a spirited reading of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol at the Museum. A Christmas Carol is the story of the bitter miser Ebenezer Scrooge who has a chance for redemption one fateful Christmas Eve. Through the visitation of three ghosts and a partner from the past, who learned his lesson too late, Scrooge travels through time to see how he became the man he is and what his future holds if he continues down that path.

A holiday treat for the whole family, performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings December 16, 17 and 18 at the Museum, 1301 Hudson St. Tickets cost $15, including refreshments; just $10 for students and seniors. Tickets will be available for purchase in advance at the Hoboken Historical Museum or at the door.

Christmas Caroling with St. Dominic’s Women’s Choir

December 15, 2009

Last year the Museum welcomed a group of Christmas carolers from the St. Dominic Academy Women’s Choir, who set off on a winding path from the Museum’s entrance at the Shipyard to spread holiday cheer throughout the neighborhood. This year, the Museum welcomes them back Tuesday evening, December 15, from 7 – 9 p.m., and invites Museum members who live between 11th and 14th Streets, east of Willow, to let us know if they would like the group to pass by their house and stop to sing a carol or two. The choir appreciates offers of cookies and hot beverages along the way, but the event is free.

Viewing the Past Through a Different Lens: The Mannahatta Project

March 21, 2010

Imagine a lush landscape of rolling hills, salt marshes, and beaches, crisscrossed by streams and brooks that feed freshwater ponds. The island that Henry Hudson spied on the east side of the river housed an incredibly diverse ecosystem, according to Dr. Eric Sanderson, a Wildlife Conservation Society ecologist who heads the Mannahatta Project.

Using historical maps and modern science, the Wildlife Conservation Society reconstructed a detailed depiction of the ecology of the land on either side of the Hudson River as it would have appeared to Hudson’s crew and the Lenape Indians in 1609 in a multilayered digital map, which can be overlaid with a modern street map.

Dr. Sanderson will visit the Museum on Sunday, March 21 at 4 p.m. to give an illustrated talk about the project, which also offers vision of how elements of the natural landscape could be restored in the form of green roofs and other natural features. “The Mannahatta Project is not only a journey into our past but also a look forward to our future and how we can keep nature in our lives,” Dr. Sanderson said when the project was announced.

The Pigeon Guys: Recollections of Vinnie Torre and Lynne Earing Chapbook Release Event

March 14, 2010

Join us at the Museum for a free event, during which copies of the chapbook will be distributed, refreshments served, and stories told about Hoboken’s pigeon flyers—past and present.

Vinnie Torre has been racing pigeons since the mid-1950s, when veteran “pigeon guys” passed along their skills, and occasionally their birds, to “the kid.” He couldn’t have known it then, but he was learning the flyer’s art during the sport’s last strong years in a city that had once boasted hundreds of rooftop lofts.

13th Annual Secret Garden Tour

June 6, 2010

Ever wonder how other homeowners manage to cultivate anything besides ivy in this urban setting? Indulge your curiosity and garden fantasies with the annual Hoboken tradition, the 13th Annual Secret Garden Tour, on Sunday, June 6, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Secret Garden Tour includes a wide range of garden designs by both dedicated gardening enthusiasts and professional designers, with clever solutions to such challenging issues as shallow soil and deep shade. One garden offers a serene, Japanese-inspired design that packs a lot of uses into a small garden, yet maintains a sense of order and spaciousness. Wooden walkways lead up from a bluestone patio across carefully tended planting beds with occasional splashes of color, and a traditional white stone bed. A Buddha keeps watch over the garden and traditional rice paper and bamboo panels protect the owners’ privacy. Another garden shows the owner’s impeccable sense of style and flair for entertaining – an outdoor extension of a home that was on last year’s House Tour.
