Object/Artifact
Both's Patent Section Liner and Scale Divider, no. 1159, made by Keuffel & Esser Company, New York, no date, circa 1891-1894. Brass and steel, machined; main flat with protracter and carriage: 13-7/8" long x 3" wide with head at right angle and when standing on surface, 2" high; flat bar with rack: 14-17/8" long x 11/16" wided x 1/4" high to top of brass rack. With: varnished wood hinged box, fitted interior with velvet bottom, with two printed labels inside top; top of lid imprinted in black with product name, griffin trademark and "Manufactured by Keuffel & Esser Co., New York." With: original 4 page instruction manual (catalogued separately as 2009.006.0163.01; due to very poor condition.)
This item was a machine for the methodical drawing of repeated and precise parallel lines at a selected angle as required by drafting workers, engineers, mapmakers, etc.
The model number and product name do not appear on the object. Model name is on box as stated and also on instruction sheets where the model number is found. The flat bar with the rack is marked on the top side at opposite ends. At left end - "A.C. Both, C.E. [Civil Engineer] | Portland Me. Pat. Nov. 20. 1888." On the right end: "Keuffel & Esser Co. | New York."
Also on the instruction sheets is "New York and Chicago." Chicago is in a very different typeface and obviously added after the original pages were typeset. This branch opened in 1891 and the St. Louis branch which opened in 1894 is not listed, so the date range for when this object was issued is probably 1891-1894.
Keuffel & Esser Co. main office and factories were in Hoboken in the period when this item was made.
