Object/Artifact
Box: Solidhed Eyelets. 250 pieces. The Solidhed Co., Hoboken, N.J. No date, circa 1920s (although it may be as wide as 1890-1930.) Pasteboard two-piece box, 2" diameter x 15/16" high, with round printed paper label (yellow printed in black) on top; printed paper seal band (same paper and ink color) around perimeter. Container has been opened with the requisite tearing/chipping of the band resulting in some losses.
With: ca. 100+ pieces of the the original contents
Printing on the side label includes company name, "The Solidhed Company"; location, "Hoboken, N.J." "250 Solidhed Eyelets, for use with the 'Solidhed' Eyelet Pliers."
The top has the product name, trademark notice as well as a central image (logo) being a racist caricature of a smiling black (negro as then typically categorized) child. No address has been established for this Hoboken company. There were other products in the Solidhed line such as tacks - see objects 2008.053.0001.
It may have been affiliated with the Hawkes-Jackson Company of New York City which was a hardware supply company. The same trademarked Solidhed name and logo has been seen on the top of the same type of undated box, but it had the Hawkes Jackson Co. on the printed side label rather than the Solidhed Co. and it had the location as New York without mention of Hoboken.
