Collections Item Detail
Wrapper: Hostess Twinkies, 5¢. "A Hostess Cake Product". Copyright 1930 Continental Baking Co.
Object/Artifact
Printer's proof (?) for wrapper: Hostess Twinkies, 5¢. "A Hostess Cake Product." Copyright 1930 Continental Baking Company. Clear glassine paper printed in red and blue, 10-1/8" high x 11-11/16" wide. Two vertical fold marks and 4 pin holes.
This item was not printed in Hoboken, but it is considered as an example of a wrapper that would have been used by Continental Baking at its Hoboken bakery where it did make Hostess products. Note the copyright date is the year that Twinkies were introduced so this package design is reputedly the first design. There are no crop or trim marks present, but the printed area and text alignment would indicate a finished wrapper size after cutting of 8" high x 10" wide. Since it was not used to actually wrap a product, it seems that it is proof / file copy.
When Continental commenced making the Hostess brand in Hoboken has not been established. It did have operations in Hoboken since the 1920s (see Historical Survey of the Schmalz Bakery) but by 1934 they had a second site (14th & Park) dedicated to baked goods (i.e cake and confectionery items) under the Hostess brand. When this building acquired painted signage stating Hostess is not known, but probably by the 1950s.
