Object/Artifact
Medal: The City of Hoboken. Patrick R. Griffin, Mayor. Safe & Sane 4th of July Celebration. 1916. (Hoboken, 1916) Cast metal, brass finish, 1-3/8" diameter with tri-color ribbon & safety pin.
Maker's mark on reverse: The Robbins Co., Attleboro, Mass.
The Hoboken Fourth of July activities included sporting competitions in track and field events for several age groups. Medals were awarded. The back has small medallion vignettes for six events: distance running; hurdles; discus throw; sprint racing; shotput; hammer throw. This particuliar medal does not name an event or the place of a winner of this medal if awarded for such. It has a heavy weight and greater relief detail than ones used in previous years; it may have been only for issue to officials, dignitaries or special guests.
It bears the Mayor's portrait on the front which is a feature not been seen on medals from previous years. Griffin served as Mayor under the new Commission form of government from 1915-1926. Note the triangular shield beneath his image has elements of the drawing seen in the City of Hoboken seal.
