Object/Artifact
Davis Dry Yeast Baking Powder. R. B. Davis Company, Hoboken, N.J., no date, circa 1922-1932. Metal can with slip lid, 2-7/8" diameter x 4-5/8" high. Embossed lid top: "Bake It Best with Davis Absolutely Pure"; bottom has a center dome with debossed 'star' at center. Original printed paper label, full height, present; stained and worn with some losses mostly at the top. Original contents not present. All text in English.
Content weight is unknown as that portion of the label is lost, but it was probably 12 ounces.
Company name and address on front at bottom: R. B. Davis Co., Hoboken, N.J. (Company was located at 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 & 18 Jackson St., Hoboken).
A 1922 Davis recipe book (archives 2010.007.0215) does not use yeast in any of the recipes which suggests they introduced it after that date.
Product is known to have been available in 1925, cf. archives 2010.007.0039, a Domestic Science Dept. publication from R. B. Davis where the product is featured on the title page. Also on the cover of 2010.007.0004, a 1930 publication by them.
The company changed from slip lid cans to ones with pry-off lids in the early 1930s which helps to narrow the range this can was sold.
