Cardboard printed in red and green, 1-5/8" diameter; die-cut tab and staple; unused. Other text following the 'B' grade letter: Thursday at Plant No. 501 Hoboken, N.J. Grade B milk was not for retail distribution and direct home consumption; it was a manufacturing grade intended for use in cheeses and other products. The lettering of Janssen suggests the 1920s and the information in notes may be useful.

Notes: The Janssen Dairy Co. was established in Hoboken and remained here for several decades. The U.S. Dairy Products Corporation was a holding company which controlled a significant number of dairy and dairy related businesses in the northeast. Its establishment as a functioning company is considered as 1923, but The New York Times of Dec. 5, 1919 notes a Delaware charter given to it as a Wilmington corporation at that time. By the mid-1920s it controlled dozens of companies and brands. Along with two other major producers, the group was considered as a Milk Trust. They controlled over two-thirds of the New York market in this period and into the 1930s. When Janssen became part of it has not been located. Status: OK Status By: dw Status Date: 2011-09-16
