DescriptionCigar box: Lankering's Special. Panatelas. (brand originated by Adoph Lankering & Bro., 58 Newark St., Hoboken; made by Lankering Cigar Company, Paterson, N.J.) No date, circa 1949-1950. Wood box with printed paper labels, edge wrapping; interior lining; tax revenue stamp - perforated cancel. Hot stamped lettering on front face "Panatelas" (24 point) and bottom legal text on factory, caution notice and tax information. Overall: 7-3/8" wide x 5-3/8" deep x 1-3/8" high. See objects 2012.007.0080 for another Lankering cigar box that differs slightly. With: printed paper cover leaf. Adoph Lankering, "Manufacturer and Dealer of Cigars," was active in civic affairs including serving as Mayor of Hoboken, 1901-1906. The brother was Frederick Lankering. Adoph Lankering & Bro. was established in 1890, by 1898 the Lankering Cigar Co. was incorporated in Paterson, N.J. and remained in business at least through the 1970s. Frederick was the driving force in the manufacture and distribution business in Paterson, while his brother was engaged with Hoboken and community affairs (see notes.) The Internal Revenue Service tax stamp is a 4" Henry Clay stamp, Class E (which meant they were valued for sale between 8 and 15 cents), Series 119, box of 25, perforated cancel (not legible) which approximately dates it circa 1949-1950. Laid in is a printed leaf with brand logo. This sheet covered the 25 cigars in the box; note the nail hole that went through the lid to secure it closed. Text on bottom including caution notice: Factory No. 64 5th District State of N.J. Notice: The Manufacturers of the Cigars herein contained have complied with all the requirements of Law. Every person is cautioned, not to use either this box for Cigars again, or the Stamp theron again, nor to remove the contents of this Box without destroying said Stamp, under the penalties of Law in such cases. Factory No. 64 5th Dist. N.J. 25 The Cigars Herein Contained Were Manufactured to Retail at More Than Eight Cents Each and Not More Than Fifteen Cents Each and Are So Tax Paid.

One of the most popular and best known men in the city, is Frederick Lankering, president of the Lankering Cigar Company, of Paterson, the largest wholesale and retail tobacco business in the city. Mr. Lankering's penance in the tobacco business covers a period of a number of years and includes activity in several cities, including Hoboken and Chicago. He was born in Hanover, Germany, June 5, [garbled]:, and received his early education in the schools of that city. He came to this country with his parents at the early age of fourteen, and went directly to Chicago, where he had brothers and sisters living. His first position was office boy with a leaf tobacco concern and he has since continued in the tobacco business. He progressed rapidly and at the age of nineteen was a salesman on the road, selling thousands of dollars worth of tobacco yearly. In 1890 Mr. Lankering came to Hoboken with his brother and the firm of Adolph Lankering & Brother was started. The brothers were progressive and prospered. Six years later, or in 1896, they opened a store in Paterson and were burned out by the famous fire of February 9, 1902. Following the fire the business was located at 148 Market Street where it still continues. In 1898 the firm was incorporated under the name of the Lankering Cigar Company with the subject of this sketch as vice-president. A further change occurred in 1914 and Mr. Lankering is now the head of the concern. His popularity and progressiveness has placed the institution at the forefront of the tobacco business in this city. Some of the brands of cigars he manufactures are widely known, chief among them being the Lankering Special and the Jose Vila. For the past three years Mr. Lankering has been the treas- urer of the local lodge of Elks. He is also a member of the Hudson Lodge of Masons, No. 71, Silk City Conclave, Im- proved Order of Heptasophs and the Pioneer Camp No. 7012. Modern Woodmen of America.
