Collections Item Detail
Can, sample: Banner Brand Coconut, 25 Pounds (actual ca. 4oz.); Franklin Baker, Hoboken, n.d., ca. 1925-1940.
Object/Artifact
Promotional can, ca. 4 ounces, labeled: "Banner Brand Sweetened Fancy Long Shred Coconut; 25 Pounds; Net Wt." Manufactured by Franklin Baker Division of General Foods Corporation, Hoboken, N.J., no date, ca. 1925-1940.
Metal can in two pieces: 3-1/4" diameter x 4-1/8" high with lift off lid (not perforated); 2 ring handles soldered to side; paper label printed in red, gold and black applied to the side, 2-11/ 16" high 3-1/8" square.
Code on label: Form 907 5M-1-1-26 [cataloger's note: the 26 in the code may suggest a year date of 1926.]
The tin, if it did have the food product (it does not have the air hole perforations), would have held perhaps 4 ounces, not 25 pounds as stated on the label. The label is obviously a reduced size version of the printed one as seen on objects catalog 2006.031.0026 which is a twenty-five pound can. The size suggests that it was a saleman's sample.
"Specially Prepared with Sugar, Glycerin & Salt."
Franklin Baker was the maker of Baker's Coconut.
