Commemorative pin: Hoboken Lodge No. 74, BPOE [Benevolent Protective Order of Elks], 1905.
Object/Artifact
Commemorative pin: Hoboken Lodge No. 74, BPOE [Benevolent Protective Order of Elks], 1905.
Five piece pin connected by metal links; cast, stamped and enameled metal; pin back plus hanging bar; overall height 4-7/8", width of elements varies from 1-5/8' to 1-3/4". No ribbon present. Reverse of bottom medal has maker's mark: Dieges & Clust, 25 John St., N.Y.
See objects 2013.005.0067 and .0068 for associated Elks commemorative items.
While the purpose of the badge is unstated on the piece it is probable that this was a commemorative badge for the Hoboken Elks' Annual Outing. There is a known series of badge associated with this event and it is consistent in manner (although each is significantly different in design) with later ones held in the Museum's collections, some of which state year and annual number (see objects 2012.001.0006 for the one from 1909 which states 9th Annual Outing.) If for the Annual Outing, it would have apparently been the fifth one.
Alternately, since 1905 was the the year of the Semi-Centennial of Hoboken (commemorating fifty years since the incorporation of the City of Hoboken) and there were civic and social events related to it, it may have been created for the Elks to wear at these golden anniversary activities.
The top element, the pin clasp bar is lettered 1905 Hoboken.
The second element from the top has motto and clock.
The third element hangs from the center of the one above; it is a roundel numbered: 74 [lodge number]
The fourth element is crossed American flags.
The fifth element, a bottom medallion has "B.P.O.E." lettering, an elk depiction in center.
