Bottle stopper, ceramic: A. Tietjen, Hoboken, N.J. No date, circa 1894-1910. White porcelain ceramic with embossed lettering in gold; cone shaped, 1" diameter top tapering to 1/2" diameter x 1" high; triangular through hole for wire bail closure rubber washer that was used with this style of stopper intended for a blob top bottle.
Probably intended for beer, but bottles with such stoppers were used for bulk commodities such as vinegars, oils, etc.
A. Tietjen has not been located in Hoboken. An Adolph Tietjen is listed as part of a family grocery business in Jersey City during some of the period attributed to this item.
A Jno [John] Tietjen had a liquor business in Hoboken during part of this period.
Bottom has maker's mark with patent date:

This style of stopper would have remained in use for many years, even beyond the life of the patent, although other bottle styles and stoppers superseded it.
