Men's winter coat of Sal Desio who stated that he wore it when appearing in 1954 film "On the Waterfront", Hoboken, 1952-1953.
Object/Artifact
Black-and-white broad check woolen men's winter coat of Sal Desio who stated that he wore it when appearing in the 1954 motion picture "On the Waterfront" filmed in Hoboken, 1952-1953.
Waist length zipper jacket with two hand pockets and two breast pockets, worn and stained. Broad check herringbone wool cloth. Red lining. Embroidered maker's label sewn in at neck: Towncraft, Pennys [J.C. Penny's brand?]. No size label or owner's markings.
Sal (Salvatore J.) Desio (April 14, 1921 - June 30, 2000) is NOT in established cast lists that included some Hoboken longshoremen or police officers that were bit players. Typical of the period, extras (background actors - and in this case, local non-professional ones) are not in such listings.
The work jacket is a heavier weight version of a similarly patterned jacket worn by Marlon Brando as the character Terry Malloy. A review of production stills and some video captures has not located a background extra wearing this coat. No photo of Desio is available at this time.
Provenance from label provided by Jim Hans (inside left breast pocket):
This jacket once owned by Sal Desio of Hoboken, NJ who said he wore it in the 1954 movie ON THE WATERFRONT, which was filmed in Hoboken.
It was purchased by Jim Hans in the late 1980s at a rummage sale given by Sal and his wife Millie in front of their home at 501 Park Ave.
