Object/Artifact
Encased coin: Ferguson Bros. Mfg. Co., Hoboken, N.J. with encased 1937 Canadian 1 cent coin.
Stamped aluminum, 1-3/8" diameter, with copper penny. Maker's mark at bottom back: Whitehead & Hoag Co. Newark N.J.
Ferguson Brothers Manufacturing Company (founded 1878 in New York City) was wholesale manufacturer of furniture and accessories located in Hoboken from 1900 until the business closed in 1945. Large factory at Eighth and Monroe Sts., mailing address 832 Monroe St.
Encasement front: horseshoe and four-leaf clover motif with phrase - Keep Me And Never Go Broke. (head side of inserted coin.)
Encasement back: company name and city as titled (tail side of inserted coin.)
A promotional novelty, the purpose of which, especially with a George IV coin from Canada, is not understood. (The company's 50th anniversary would have been a typical event to commemorate, but that would been 1938, not 1937. The year 1937 would have been the first year that King George VI was on currency.)
