Display Value: Good Notes: Gonzales in Business 50 Years Proprietor of Hoboken Hotel Surprised by Group of Teachers, Others on Golden Anniversary Fifty years in business in Hoboken were celebrated yesterday by George Gonzales, proprietor of the American Hotel, and former mayor of the city of Hoboken. News of the anniversary got about, and at noontime a delegation of Hoboken teachers and many groups of other friends, surprised Mr. Gonzales by coming in for luncheon and to wish the genial proprietor good luck for the future. The group of school teachers were all from School No. 3, and they made the occasion a real party. Miss Barbara Garrity and Miss Helen Brennan, sang, and others of the group made informal talks. Clusters of roses and a basket of spring blossoms were presented to the host, and Mrs. Gonzales sent flowers from the family garden in the country to add to the festive appearance of the dining room. The group of teachers from School No. 3. who came in for the surprise, included Mrs. J. McMullin, Miss Ida Deitering, Miss Rita Murray, Miss Mary Maloney, Miss Eleanor Bender, Miss Ella Eaton, Miss Grace Vilar, Mrs. Helen Pindar Fallon, Miss Grace Vilar, Miss Ann Kennedy, Miss Marion Raueh, Miss Ida Krk, Miss Christine Worsthorn, Miss Betty Purceli, Miss Grace Pope, Miss Rita Stuhrman, Miss Constance Heath. Mr. Gonzale's daughters, Miss Florence Gonzales, who is a member of the faculty of School No. 2: Miss Claire Gonzales of No. 5, and Miss Georgine Gonzales of No. 9, were let in one the plans for the surprise, and so joined the group from No. 3 for the luncheon party. A number of the business men and other old friends who dropped in for luncheon, added their congratulations for the day, among them being Corporation Attorney Horace Allen, Assistant City Clerk Thomas Kehoe, Arthur Malone, Anthony La Porta, O. J. Pellet of Besson and Pellet, several members of the staff of the Hoboken Land and Improvement Company, and many others. Former Mayor Gonzales was born in Brooklyn, but came to Hoboken back in 1874 and went to work for Joseph O'Brien, proprietor of the restaurant which was the forerunner of the present hotel. On Mr. O'Brien's death, Mr. Gonzales took over the place and developed it as the "American Hotel," and has been its host ever since. In 1908 and 1909 he was councilman in Hoboken and its mayor in 1910 and 1911. Then he decided to quit politics and devote himself to the management of his first business enterprise.
