Newsclipping of captioned photo of demolition underway on Stevens Academy, Hoboken published in The New York Times, no date, probably published May 15 or 16,1976 on a New Jersey page.
Text of caption:
HOBOKEN LANDMARK DEMOLISHED: Spectators observing progress of the wrecking ball yesterday as demolition began on the 116-year-old Stevens Academy. Efforts by local citizens groups to save the historic structure failed. The site will be used for a drive-in branch of the Garden State National Bank.
Also a reference record in photo catalog for image, 2006.014.0004.01. The school was being demolished for a new bank (Garden State National Bank) structure with drive-through (drive-in) windows. Mentions preservation efforts that failed to save building. None of the children are identified.
Also see 2005.014.0003 and 2005.014.0004.01 for a captioned New York Times May 12,1976 article with photo of building just prior to demolition. That article stated demolition was to start on Friday (May 14th) and with the caption with this image, it is likely this is a view on that Friday that demolition started.
